Today we travel to northwest Iowa to discover a variety of longtime businesses that produce everything from ice cream to candy bars. We begin the day with a drive through the beautiful Iowa countryside to the Loess Hills Lavender Farm in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Owner, Mary Hamer, will teach us how to cook, clean, and heal using lavender. Shop for lavender products in the gift shop and enjoy lavender cookies and lemonade for refreshments. We next travel to the small farming community of Hinton, Iowa, and the Tucker Hills Vineyard.  Taste a variety of wines from five different varieties including Niagara, Esprit, Marechal Foch, Concord, and Landot. After learning about the vineyard and each wine, we will enjoy a catered lunch by Sneaky’s Chicken. Founded in 1979, Sneaky’s Chicken grew into a popular family dining establishment in the Sioux City, Iowa area. The famous chicken is crispy on the outside and moist in the inside.

After lunch we will go to the Wells Visitor Center & Ice Cream Parlor in Le Mars, Iowa, the Ice Cream Capital of the World.  This small community of 10,000 people makes more ice cream at the Wells ice cream factory than any other location on earth. Learn about the process of making ice cream and the Wells family story. The company dates back to 1913 when Fred Wells, Jr. paid $250 to a local dairy man for a few milk cans, a horse, and a knowledge of the business. By 1925 Fred partnered with his brother, Harry, to start the Wells Ice Cream Company. The ice cream parlor features over 40 flavors including exclusives like huckleberry and mocha almound fudge. You can also enjoy malts, shakes, sundaes, and an old fashioned ice cream soda.

Departing Le Mars, we travel to Sioux City, Iowa, and the Jolly Time Koated Kernels Popcorn Shoppe. The shoppe is the proud home of the Jolly Time Museum, showcasing 100 years of history of the beloved Jolly Time popcorn. Discover how Jolly Time grew from its humble beginnings in the basement of a Sioux City home into a nationwide household name. View colorful exhibits of Jolly Time vintage packaging, celebrity endorsements, and personal artifacts from the company’s founding family. Nearby is the Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe. The Palmer family has been making candy in Iowa since 1900. Visiting the candy shoppe is a wonderfully delicious step back in time. Discover bulk goodies like chocolate covered peanuts, peppermint twists, and roasted nuts. Relive your childhood memories with Twin Bing candy bars, homemade brittle, and sea salt caramels. The shoppe also includes a small museum that showcases historic candy making equipment, vintage photos, and other fun historical items.
