DAY 1: Monday, September 13, 2021
We depart Omaha for Springfield, Illinois, the hometown of President Abraham Lincoln. Upon our hotel arrival, we are greeted by a reenactor portraying Mary Lincoln, the wife of Abraham Lincoln. Mary will welcome us to Springfield and give us an insight to life in the capital town during the 1850’s. After settling into the hotel we will enjoy a complimentary evening meal provided by the hotel property.
DAY 2: Tuesday, September 14, 2021
This morning we visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The museum is a commemoration of Lincoln’s life and legacy told through special effect theaters, interactive exhibits, and one of a kind artifacts. Visit a reproduction of the White House as it looked in the year 1861. Along with the excellent exhibits at the museum, we will enjoy a special private “from the vault” presentation centered upon historic artifacts related to the assassination of Lincoln in 1865. Learn the story of each artifact and its role in American history. Lunch today is at Maldaner’s Restaurant, a local favorite that has been serving Springfield residents and visitors since 1884. After lunch, we will visit the Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. At the entrance to the tomb is a bronze bust of Lincoln where visitors have stopped to rub the nose for good luck. Next, we travel downtown to the Old State Capital where Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided Cannot Stand” speech. A guide will meet our group and give us an interesting tour of this historic building. After the tour, we will meet a President Abraham Lincoln reenactor who will give us a tour of famous Lincoln sites including the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Lincoln’s Home National Historic Site, and the Lincoln house neighborhood. We return to the hotel for a little rest before leaving for dinner at Saputo’s Italian Restaurant. Founded in 1948, this family owned restaurant is famous serving Italian dishes from family recipes handed down through four generations. Tonight enjoy a large buffet including chicken parmigiana, homemade ravioli, baked mostaccioli, rigatoni alfredo, tortellini alfredo, and Italian meatballs.
DAY 3: Wednesday, September 15, 2021
This morning we depart Springfield and drive north to the 1830’s replica village of New Salem. Travel back in time to the reconstructed village where Abraham Lincoln lived as a young man. See where he split rails, clerked in a store, and served as postmaster, among other positions. Lincoln left New Salem for Springfield in 1837, and the village was generally abandoned about 1840. Today the town’s replica offers living history demonstrations and a glimpse into the life of a small 1830’s Midwest community. Later this morning we begin our journey back to Omaha arriving at the Comfort Inn & Suites at 7:30 pm.
