DAY ONE: Wednesday, May 8, 2019
Spring means beautiful tulip gardens in the Dutch community of Pella, Iowa. Enjoy an estimated 106,000 tulips in over 180 flowerbeds located in parks, streets, and local businesses. Arrive in early afternoon and join a local guide who will give us an insight to the community’s Dutch history and take us to the best displays of tulips. Since it is a week after their big tulip festival, we will avoid the crowds and have the attractions all to ourselves. The guided tour finishes at the Klokkenspel carillon clock for daily performance. The clock has eight, four toot mechanical figures, and 147 bell chimes that present characters from Pella’s Dutch history. Next, we visit the nearby Pella Historical Village. The village contains twenty-three historic buildings and over 28,000 tulips on display. The buildings include the 126 foot tall Vermeer Mill, the largest working grain windmill in the United States. After checking into our hotel for one night, we visit the historical Pella Opera House for an authentic Dutch dinner. After dinner, the Duchesses dance group will entertain us. The group of local young women in costume will perform some traditional Dutch dances.
DAY TWO: Thursday, May 9, 2019
The next morning we visit Frisian Farms to learn about the process of making traditional Gouda cheese while sampling a variety of cheese ages and flavors. Then we travel back to downtown Pella where we will visit the In’t Velds Meat Market. We will hear a presentation and discover the secrets of making “double Dutch” bologna, spiced beef and other meats. Next, we travel to the Pella Golf and Country Club for a special Dutch sandwich luncheon. We get to taste some of the meats we learned about at the meat market. After lunch, we begin our journey back to Omaha with fond memories of windmills, cheese, and tulips.
