Highlights: Wilber Czech Museum - Wilber Czech Craft Shop - Frank’s Smokehouse - Homestead National Historical Park - Capital View Winery & Vineyards

Today, we visit the small community of Wilber, the Czech Capital of Nebraska. The Wilber Czech Museum was established to preserve Czech artifacts that pertain to the heritage and culture of the Czech pioneer settlers in Nebraska. At the museum you will enjoy three levels of displays with room settings from the dentist’s office to the meat market plus a variety of traditional Czech costumes. Nearby is the Wilber Czech Craft Shop which specializes in making hand embroidered women’s Czech costumes and men’s decorated Czech shirts with vests for nationwide Czech festivals. The women of the shop also make decorated dolls, crocheted hot pads, and embroidered tea towels. After a Czech lunch at the Fox Hole Tavern, we will visit Frank’s Smokehouse. The smokehouse offers a huge variety of Czech food items, including kolaches, potato dumplings, rye bread, summer sausage, and jumbo cinnamon rolls.

Later this afternoon, we travel to Homestead National Historic Park near Beatrice, Nebraska. The Homestead Act of 1862 granted 160 acres of free land to claimants. The homesteader was required to live on the land for at least five years or plant trees. Daniel Freeman was the first person to file on January 1, 1863, and now the Homestead National Historic Park is located on his original claim. Millions of Americans including immigrants, women, and formerly enslaved men and women flocked west to make claims and achieve the American dream with this opportunity. The visitor center museum looks at the far reaching effects the Homestead Act had upon the landscape and people. The park includes a replica of the first cabin built by Daniel Freeman.

Our last destination is the Capital View Winery & Vineyards in Roca, Nebraska. Enjoy a tasting of five wines before departure.
